ALLISON - MILLAR. Can any one help? I am new to genealogy.  In a letter I have, dated 1865  my great grandfather states that his father, Walter ALLISON grew up in Bishoptown "16 miles west of Glasgow in Lanark and his mother, Isabella MILLAR was born and raised in Coatbridge "8 miles east of Glasgow". They were married Feb 1, 1835 in Old Monkland, Lanark.  Walter had four brothers and one sister. I want to know when they were born, and I also want to know any further information about Isabella MILLAR.  Anything will be useful.  Perhaps someone can give me some more details? Baker - Weston
My Family name is Weston and I have traced a Great Grandmother ( Marion Baker ) to the Old Monklands area. In the 1881 census the dwelling place was referred to as "Douglas Support". She had a brother (22) and Sister (29) staying at the same address. Does anyone have any information on "Douglas Support". There were other individuals and Families staying under the same address. There was also a "Douglas Support Lodge". Any help would be most appreciated at [email removed].  Jim Weston

BOWLES/CANDLISH
Can anyone help? Looking for the area in Scotland from which  my ancestors came.   It is possible that they did not come directly from Scotland...possibly via Northern Ireland, and the United States, but there was no question that they were "Scottish" in origin.  Alexander and Elizabeth (Candlish) Bowles (aka Bols, Boles, Bowls) were born about 1750 and bought land in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley in 1787.  Their first child, Mary Jane Bowles, was born in 1774, so expect that her parents married about1772/3.  This daughter married William Nesbit, and they were members of the Covenanter Presbyterian Church when it was built, which makes me wonder if the "strict Scottish Presbyterians" may have been Covenanters, but this is only a guess. Their last child, who is in my direct line, Hugh Graham Bowles b. 1788, was named for the first Presbyterian minister in the area, Rev. Hugh Graham, who was sent out by the Associate synod of the Secession Church in Scotland in 1785. Rev. Graham was described as "a man of peace and an eminent example of meekness and piety".

RANKIN - MILLER My GGGrandmother Elizabeth Fimmerton RANKIN was born in July, 1813, in Kirkintilloch. She married Edward Tibbenham (recorded as Tubnum) in Glasgow in 1834, and moved to Norfolk, where she died in 1895.  Her parents were John RANKIN (b. "about 1779 in Kirkin Hilloch" -- Kirkintilloch, surely?) and Anne MILLER (b. "about 1783 in New Monkland"). To this point, the record is fairly definite, but I'm lost in going further back -- there were SO many Rankins and Millers in the area in the 1700's. Any help at all will be very gratefully received, particularly as this is the only branch of my tree originating in Scotland.   Bruce Marsh (Madison, Wisconsin; formerly New Zealand)    [email removed]

Ritchie My great grandfather Alexander Ritchie was born at New Monkland on December 15 , 1941, his sister Ann Ritchie on 3 September 1945 and sister Agnes in 1846. Their parents were Walter Legget Ritchie and Euphemia Sinclair. I have no information about the date and place of   their marriage but have assumed that it would be around 1840. Walter is said to have been born on 9 July 1820 at St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh. I  have no information on Walter's parents. Wife Euphemia is said to have be born on 11 July 1881 at Barony, Glasgow. Her Death Certificate showed her parents to be Catherine Graham and Alexander Sinclair ( Joiner) but no other details. I would like to establish the date and place of marriage in the hope that with the information I would be able to turn up a Marriage Certificate which would give information concerning their respective parents. Walter was killed in a mining accident at Grangemouth on 25 Apr. 1855. Unfortunately the GRO has no record of the death.  Any information or help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Walter Ritchie Winnipeg, MB Canada [email removed]

WHITELAW - STEVENSON  Can anyone help? I have been researching this name for several years, and have verified that I am descended from a John WHITELAW, a Covenanter, one of two Johns, either John "sometime in Stand" who was executed  Edinburgh November 1683, or John from Bothwellshields, Lanarkshire. I believe it could be the one from Stand, as the two eldest siblings of my grandmother Ann STEVENSON 1852 - 1941, were born in Stand.
I should be interested to hear from anyone who is researching these WHITELAWS     --
