Drumpellier Country Park - THE HOME FARM

The Home Farm is on the southern edge of Drumpellier Park in Coatbridge and was built in the early 1820s . It has an enormous square courtyard - nearly 100 yards each side - containing byres, stables, and wagon stores. The north side backs on to the Monkland Canal - note the canal bridge near the left corner of the rectangle. In the centre of the courtyard was a circular doocot (Dove Cote) - this was known as a Poultry House at time it was built.

The beautiful farm buildings are constructed in weathered red sandstone, crowstepped and slated.

Drumpelier Home Farm.
Note the doocot in the centre. The front entrance - at the bottom of the picture - faces almost due south. Note the bridge over the Monkland canal on the left corner. The canal is unused and has developed a green algae covering.

Sadly the farm has been extremely neglected - the buildings are in danger of falling down. It is believed that negotiations are taking place with the object of the property is being sold to housing developers - to convert into flats or apartments.

We at Monklands Online would love to see this historical building being put into the public domain. We feel that, of all the listed buildings in the Monklands - in Scotland even, this is the most important one for us to keep. There are no other buildings like it - anywhere - the Home Farm must be developed for everyone to visit - to be turned into a farming museum / visitor attraction ......

On 14th August 2002 - advertisements have appeared seeking planning permission to develop the Home Farm for housing.

  • A developer is seeking planning permission to build 43 houses (Ref: C/02/0157/OUT) on the farm land
  • and to create 23 dwelling within the restored farm buildings (Ref: C/02/0154/FUL).
  • Listed Building Consent is also sought ( Ref: C/02/0153/LBC).

I will be objecting to the application and I hope that many more will follow my example. I will also seek to get the local papers interested.

Objections should be sent within 21 days (from 14th August) to:
