Dreaming o' the Winner

Martin Rooney

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5WlK-KZTHA

In 1883 Airdrieonians (previously Excelsior) FC undertook a short (two day) tour to Belfast. Sailing on the SS Gorilla they played two games on 31st December 1883 and 1st January 1884, winning both (1 - 4 & 0 - 7). The team retuned home by 7.20am the next day!

The Lyrics are

Dreaming o' the Winner

Chorus

On board the good ship Gorilla
Upon the Irish Sea
Dreaming o' the winner
Wishing it was me.

We sailed from Greenock Dock
Bound for Belfast town
For a weekend wi' the boys
A team of some renown.

We play for glory, not for money
Our riches found in victory
We earned our stripes and played like diamonds
For a little place in history

Chorus

Never will I forget
The crowd at Belfast pier
And I will always remember
Their voices raised in cheer

Play up! Play up!
Play up! Excelsior
Lose or win, we're in it together
Still I hear the crowds roar

Chorus

The Old Year it has gone
To toasts and songs and friends
And we are going home
Nothing changes in the end

Happy New Year, though I'll shed my tears
United we'll be, one and all
The games are done, time to go home
Wee Airdrie's gone to the wall.

Chorus
