Until 1922 the entire island of Ireland was one administrative unit. Both Dublin and Belfast repositories have at least copies of the pre-1922 records, with those in Belfast largely, but not completely, confined to the nine historic counties of Ulster. It is only after 1922 that the records are different. The Public Record Office in Dublin was destroyed during the Irish Civil War in 1922, along with virtually all its holdings. From the point of view of genealogy, the most significant losses were the 19th-century census returns, the Church of Ireland parish registers and the testamentary collections. Anything not in the PRO has survived, including non-Church of Ireland parish records, civil records of births, marriages and deaths, property records and later censuses. For much of the material that was lost, there are abstracts, transcripts and fragments of the originals.

Irish Genealogy Links - John Grenham  Maintained by one of Ireland leading resident genealogists and experts on Dublin genealogy, this site offers a program which searches a catalogue of genealogical resources within Ireland which are useful, additional links and online archives available for searching.

Essential Genealogy Links Page     Source of Irish genealogy links maintained by the House of Waterford, it is more extensive than many others and includes links to homepages about Irish surnames and pedigrees.

Ulster Historical Foundation   this site promises to be the main resource for Northern Ireland - offers an online search as well as yearly conferences.

The Irish Family History Foundation is the co-ordinating body for a network of government approved genealogical research centres in the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and in Northern Ireland which have computerised tens of millions of Irish ancestral records of different types. Contains links to each local historical and research centre for every county.

The Irish Family History Foundation (I.F.H.F.), an all Ireland not-for-profit organization, runs the www.rootsireland.ie site. It oversees the creation of a database of Irish genealogical sources which enables those who wish to trace their Irish ancestry to have access to all the relevant data in one place.

The Irish Family History Foundation is pleased to announce that some Co. Wexford Roman Catholic parish registers are now available as part of its Online Research Service.

Irish Surname lists Surname lists maintained by the county hosts are available for public posting and often lead you to others who are researching the same lines and can share information with you.
