I live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and am wondering if any of the folks with Waddell names know of a Waddell family who lived in Bothwell, around the mid 19th Century? Duncan Waddell and his family came to Dartmouth around this time, from Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died in Dec. 1891, here in Dartmouth. He had accumulated a small fortune, his estate being worth $80,000. He was a prominent contractor and owned much of the waterfront. He also had a country home called "Burnside". Much of the land of "Burnside" is now a modern industrial park, called by this same name. He had bequeathed Burnside to his daughter's son Duncan Waddell Lunch. His son, Robert was drowned in the harbour. Duncan Waddell was involved in transporting gravel and stone from McNab's Island beach to repair fortifications around Halifax Harbour. It was either he, or his son Robert Waddell who donated the land on which the present St. James United (then Presbyterian) Church was built (It opened 1871). He had a son Charles as well as Robert, and his Mother was Agnes. He is buried in Park Cemetery in Dartmouth.
